HEIC vs JPG: which should you use?

The short answer

Keep shooting HEIC on your iPhone for storage efficiency, and convert to JPG whenever a photo needs to leave the Apple ecosystem: uploads, Windows users, email attachments, government forms, and older software. HEIC is the better container; JPG is the better traveler.

That split is exactly why both formats still exist. Neither is simply better, they optimize for different things.

Where HEIC wins

HEIC stores a photo in roughly half the bytes of an equivalent JPG, using the modern HEVC video codec's still-image mode. It also supports 10-bit color and depth maps for portrait mode, and it holds bursts and Live Photos in one container.

On a 128GB phone, HEIC effectively doubles your photo capacity. iCloud backups and syncs move twice as fast. Inside Apple's world there is no visible downside at all.

Where JPG wins

JPG has been the universal photo format since 1992. Every device, browser, website, upload form, printer kiosk, and government portal on earth accepts it. It carries no patent licensing baggage, which is exactly the problem that keeps HEIC support patchy on Windows and across the wider software world.

When a photo needs to be seen by an unknown recipient or an unknown system, JPG is the only safe bet.

A practical workflow

Leave your iPhone camera on High Efficiency (Settings, Camera, Formats) so storage stays cheap. When a specific photo needs to travel, run it through our HEIC to JPG converter, up to 30 photos per batch. Expect the JPG to be 1.5 to 2 times larger, which is the compatibility tax.

Why does Windows struggle with HEIC?

The HEVC codec inside HEIC carries patent licensing costs. Microsoft ships the free HEIF extension but the required HEVC codec is a paid add-on, so many Windows machines never get it.

Does converting back and forth damage photos?

Each lossy re-encode costs a little quality, so avoid repeated round trips. Convert once, keep your HEIC original, and make fresh conversions from it whenever needed.
